Sis. Lewis: Zone Conference Notes on being Anxiously Engaged in a Good Cause

2017-1-20-zc-moses-lake-34

Here are some of the things we are talking about in the training I’m giving on Being Anxiously Engaged at our Zone Conferences:

D&C 58:26-29

26 For behold, it is not meet that I should command in all things; for he that is compelled in all things, the same is a slothful and not a wise servant; wherefore he receiveth no reward.

27 Verily I say, men should be anxiously engaged in a good cause, and do many things of their own free will, and bring to pass much righteousness;

28 For the power is in them, wherein they are agents unto themselves. And inasmuch as men do good they shall in nowise lose their reward.

29 But he that doeth not anything until he is commanded, and receiveth a commandment with doubtful heart, and keepeth it with slothfulness, the same is damned.

Definition of ANXOUUS = earnestly desirous; eager

Examples of Anxious Engagement
Interestingly they all have to do with Missionary Work

Jacob 5:71-72
Labor in the vineyard with your might, (x3)

D&C 138:27,30,36
Ministry among the dead limited to the brief time between crucifixion and resurrection (no vacation or time off to relax here.)

Helaman 10:4-5, 12, 17
Declared the word with unwearyingness, going home, he did stop and go back.  He went from multitude to multitude until he had declared it unto them all (whether they listened or not).

D&C 4:2-4
With all your heart, might, might and strength

D&C 123:12-17
Waste and wear out our lives, attended to with great earnestness, do all things that lie in our power

D&C 33:7-10 OYM and spare not, I am with you
Go back and note the blessings that follow this kind of behavior.

Patriarchal Blessings
How many of you have looked to your Blessing as a road map?
How many of you found a detailed route outlined there?
How many of you have come away with more questions than answers?
Why do you suppose HF doesn’t give us the details up front?

Wilderness Experiences
1 Nephi 8:7-8
Lehi before the vision found himself in a dark and dreary waste
For the space of many hours in darkness
I began to pray that the Lord would have mercy on me
THEN, Vision given

Pay attention to WILDERNESS experiences in the scriptures and when and to whom they are given (the best and finest leaders and followers).  Why do you suppose this happens?

Have you ever had to earn something? How did you treat it?
Is it different when something is just handed to you? How?
What do we learn from figuring things out on our own rather than being told?
How does it differ?

There is URGENCY in this work.
Why?
Converts? What would you have given to have learned about the gospel sooner? Why?
What is at stake?
Many missionaries have a “go with the flow” attitude. (Marking time.)
Where does that lead us? Happiness? No. Frustration, depression, homesickness.

How do we raise our expectations and hold ourselves to a higher standard?
GBH: Forget yourself and go to work!

Better Planning, nightly, weekly
Goal setting
–New Year’s resolutions in Interviews
–Specific or general?
–David O McKay quote–YOU determine what you will be. Go after it.
Don’t wait for things to happen to you, go make them happen.

I have heard many wonderful goals that sound like this:

“Want to be a better disciple of Christ”
“Want to be more faithful”
“Want to be more obedient”
“Want to be a better missionary”
“Want to be more Christ-like”
“Want to be more diligent”
“Want to be more converted”
“Want to be more faithful”

SO WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT IT?
Think about specific ways you can make that happen and get to work!

Be kind to others, including your comp
Learn about what Jesus did in the scriptures
Memorize scriptures that inspire you to change
Replace rogue thoughts with good thoughts, scriptures, hymns, actions
Watch how you spend time, keep moving, learning, finding
Do you waste time?
What do you have to show for how you spend your time?
Is down time renewing strength, or selfish?
Is your time spent purposefully, effectively, carefully?
Listen in on your own conversations. Do they uplift? Edify?
Do you observe and learn from others?
Do you magnify your gifts and talents?
Do you feel urgency?

What are other specific things you can do to be Anxiously Engaged in this Work and bring about Much Righteousness?

Conclusion
Figuring things out on your own allows the Holy Ghost to be an influence in your lives (doing things of your own free will).
Figuring things out on your own allows you to receive revelation.
Figuring things out on your own allows you to customize your actions to your own personalities.
Use your own strengths and talents and ideas.
Adapt to your own capacity and ability.
This allows you to feel great joy and accomplishment.
This will bring great blessings. Learn what they are!
