Can you say UMBEL?

2017-6-11 to Royal, DfG Evelyn (13)I learned a new word today from the farmers at our next stop in Quincy, where we headed for a Missionary Fireside where Pres Lewis and I were the guest speakers.  As we drove from Royal, we passed this beautiful field of onions.  I mentioned it later to the farmers we met this evening and learned that the name of an onion flower is UMBEL.2017-6-11 to Royal, DfG Evelyn (14)Here are a few photos I found online as I learned more about harvesting onion seeds. These fields are growing onion for the seeds, not the onions.  The Umbel is filled with these small dark seeds that will someday grow into green onions, or scallions.

Brother Yates said in his fields, they put down paper and the umbels dry on the paper, then the seeds are gathered up.  It takes about 6 weeks for the seeds to dry and fall from the umbels, and during that time the farmers pray the winds will stay away.2017-6-11 to Royal (2)     2017-6-11 to Royal (3)  2017-6-11 to Royal (1)
